Helping freelancers shift their mindset, find their confidence, and build businesses that fit them
Freelancing is fantastic — but it’s also incredibly hard.
Doubt creeps in. Confidence wavers.
I’m here to help you move through those moments — with mindset support, practical strategies, and a focus on building a freelance career that aligns with your goals and values.
I’m Heidi, and I help freelancers break through the sticking points that hold them back–whether that’s inconsistent income, unclear positioning, or working with clients who don’t fully see their value.
I started freelancing nearly 20 years ago — long before LinkedIn was mainstream and “building your brand” meant anything beyond doing good work.
I didn’t have a big network. I didn’t have a perfect plan. What I had was a willingness to learn, to keep showing up, and to figure things out one step at a time.
Along the way, I built a career writing and strategizing for major financial institutions, legal firms, healthcare brands, and SaaS companies. I taught courses at Simon Fraser University, coached freelancers one-on-one, and launched businesses that let me work on my own terms.
It wasn’t always easy.
I faced seasons of doubt, income loss, pivots, and plenty of “what now?” moments.
What kept me going — and growing — wasn’t just hard work. It was learning to trust myself, align my business with my values, and move forward even when the next step felt uncertain.
That’s why I created Happy Freelancing: To give freelancers like you the support, strategies, and encouragement I wish I’d had earlier — and to help you build a career that truly fits you.

Work hard. Get uncomfortable. Grow your business.
Freelancing is one of the most powerful career paths out there — but it demands more from us than most people realize.
- You have to be willing to work hard.
- You have to be willing to be uncomfortable.
- You have to face the doubts, the slow seasons, the “am I good enough?” moments — often while working alone at your kitchen table.
The truth is, mindset is often what holds us back more than a lack of skills or knowledge ever could.
Having outside support — someone who gets it, who can offer real strategies and steady encouragement — can make all the difference.
You don’t have to do this alone.
You don’t have to pretend you’re fine when you’re stuck.
With the right mindset shifts, practical plans, and consistent action, you can build a freelance business that not only supports your life — but reflects your goals, your values, and your real potential.
A bit about me
- I’ve been freelancing since 2006 — through career pivots, economic downturns, and plenty of mindset hurdles.
- My background includes writing and content strategy for major financial institutions, law firms, healthcare brands, and SaaS companies.
- I was the BC Regional Director for the Professional Writers Association of Canada (for four years)
- I also teach freelancers through university programs, workshops, and one-on-one coaching.
- I believe hard work matters — but so do rest, courage, and building a career that fits you.
- My favourite way to start the day: a walk outside to clear my head and set my intentions (and listen to a great podcast).
- My favourite kind of workday: one with caffeine, a clear plan, and a chance to work with other freelancers.
- When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me reading, exploring new places (even close to home), or thinking about my next big project.
- Fun fact: I once quit a terrible job with no backup plan after getting yelled at by a customer and soaked by a sprinkler. Terrifying at the time but it was the best decision I ever made.
- I am always advocating for writers, editors and other freelancers
You don't have to figure freelancing out alone.
You don’t have to wait until you feel 100% ready, have it all mapped out, or overcome every mindset hurdle first.
You just need the right support, clear strategies, and the courage to take your next step.
If you're ready to build a freelance career that aligns with your goals — and your values — I'd love to support you.
